Psalm 149:5-9

This song was born as I was in the middle of learning to express my heart in honesty and transparency to the Lord. When the enemy would lie to me, I discovered that his attack meant God was trying to create something through me. So I began to sing my prayer to Father and put down the lies. This song was born as a result. The second verse came in the midst of dealing with direct and very personal attacks upon my character and ministry. I would never make it one day without the Rock of Jesus to stand upon. This song is a testimony of God's sustaining power in my life as I seek an intimate relationship with Him through worship and praise.

Hide Me in the Cleft of the Rock

April 15, 1987 (Verse Two: November 10, 1997)

Exodus 33:12-23

When the enemy attacks–whether with temptations or with accusations–we either listen or fight. When we listen to the adversary, we actually aid him in placing the old debilitating weights around our necks. When we fight, we respond with truth–and the truth always has the effect of setting us free. One of the ways we can fight off these attacks is by placing ourselves within the sanctuary of God's presence until the storm or onslaught passes over. I find this is the best counterattack when I feel personally weak or overwhelmed. Instead of listening to the enemy, I must hid myself within the safety of the cleft of the Rock God has carved out for me in Himself. This song was born during one of those times of attack against my identity.
