Whenever it draws close to the time for the Next Generation Creative Institute, I begin meditating on the lives of those who will be attending, more specifically, asking the Lord to show me any songs for this particular group that would help them in some way. As I began to think about what the needs of this group might be, I began to feel things I felt in my past, and not so near past, that led me to the words of this song.

When overwhelmed
When feelings grow so intense that I feel numb
When I do not see a way out of the present darkness
Whenever I feel alone
I cry out to God to simply surround me.

Since we never leave God’s presence, the cry of my heart is more precisely “Surround me with Your presence in a tangible way”. Typically, the way I feel begins to change when I put off the lies of the enemy and replace them with the Truth of God’s Word. That is the crux of this song. As the gathering proceeded and I taught the song to the group, it became a catalyst of healing and affirmation to each one there. May it be so to you.
