On March 12, 2020, I received word from my brother, Bob, that his wife, Janiell, had just passed away suddenly at the age of 57. To say we are all devastated is an understatement. Bob and Janiell were married for 30 years and have two children. They were about to become grandparents for the first time and Janiell was so excited for this. This all took place just as the nationwide panic over COVID-19 was beginning. Bob asked me to sing When the Night is Falling at her memorial service. I could not help but remember feeling like I had just sang at their wedding…like 30 years had passed so quickly. Bob also asked me to accompany a friend, Shirley, as she sang a song she had originally sung at their wedding as well. She sang His Eye Is On the Sparrow and the song she had sung at their wedding, Someone Like You (from the Broadway musical, Jekyll and Hyde). Shirley is a gifted vocalist and God’s anointing on her is deep. As she sang the words to the love song, Someone Like You, I was blown away by the most amazing thing. In that moment, I realized God loved someone like me…formerly bound in sin…still struggling to fight my way through the muddled thoughts the lies of the enemy now bring my way via Parkinson’s Disease…and that He loves me - someone like me - no matter what! That is the short version of how this song was born…and proof that God wastes nothing. Not even the loss of a loved one. God will use whatever He wants to use to get the message of His love through to us. God loves us right where we are - but loves us enough to not leave us there.
