Two Questions for Releasing Creativity -
I approach song receiving (and all creativity for that matter) with relationship in mind. Relationship is life. Without relationship there is no life. If we are creating to bless God and minister to others, there is a way we can build relationship through our creativity. When I approach ministry to others I simply ask two questions. One: Lord, would you give me insight into the needs of this person or group of people I am about to minister to as I receive this song? Two: Lord, would you allow me to feel toward them what You feel toward them? If I can approach my creativity with the needs of others in mind and, at the same time, have the compassion of THE Creator toward them on my heart and mind, I believe the Lord will allow me to go to places creatively that will set the captive free and heal a broken heart or release a deep joy in the heart of the person I am trying to reach. Be relationship-minded as you create today. And be prepared to walk relationally with hurting people – an watch your creativity expand exponentially as you focus on the Lord and upon the needs of others. -
The LORD is gracious and merciful;
Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
The LORD is good to all,
And His mercies are over all His works.
Psalm 145:8-9 NASB

God Wastes Nothing. Neither Should You -
As you ready yourself to receive from the Lord, remember that a transparent heart is a heart that has room to receive. Empty your heart to the Lord in honesty. He can handle whatever you have hidden there. Reality is He sees whatever you hide and loves you anyway – so why not unburden yourself and be a vessel He can flow through. As you receive songs from Father, remember this truth: He wastes nothing when offered to Him in honesty. He will not waste your sorrow…but will use it to bring joy in a song. He will not waste failure…but will use it to bring restoration and hope to others. He will not waste your pain…but will use it to bring healing and comfort to others. Allow the Lord the freedom to use whatever He will and wants as you receive from Him. Remember, take God outside of the box…and release yourself from any box you’ve placed yourself in today. -
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28 NASB

Write Your Song’s History -
Every time I receive a song from the Lord, I write the history of the song – the story behind the song. Along with any Scriptural reference used to inspire I write down what I was experiencing that brought birth to this particular song. Why? When I share the song publicly and share the story people can more readily identify with the song if they know its circumstances. When I write the history, I leave my family and those I minister to a legacy of God’s grace. Like breadcrumbs along the journey, I leave an ongoing message of the faithfulness of God in my wake for future generations that says, “I’ve been through what you’re going through. You can do this!” Why receive a song that has no story to tell behind the song? That’s like seeing a beautiful cloud and being able to get to the beauty but, after getting there, finding no substance. Always record the story behind the song. You never know who is going to need to hear it – whether it be a story of pain and sorrow and suffering or a story of laughter and victory and joy. -
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
That I may tell of all Your works.
Psalm 73:28 NASB -
Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations;
You established the earth, and it stands.
Psalm 119:90 NASB

Write From the King’s Point of View
As new creations, we are called to seek first the kingdom of God. The way we do that is simply by seeking first the KING. When we seek the King, we naturally come to a place where we begin to see and view life and its circumstances from the King’s point of view. From that vantage point, we see with more clarity and grace. As you seek Him today, allow Him to show you what he sees when you or a family member or friend face trials or difficult circumstances. Write from this new perspective and watch freedom and victory flow where once bondage and defeat held sway. True wisdom, after all, is seeing life and its circumstances from God’s point of view. Draw near to Him in your writing and get a glimpse of what He sees today.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew 6:33 NASB

Songs of Deliverance
Many of the songs I receive are very specific in nature. Call it a ‘word of knowledge’ or a ‘prophetic song’…call it what you will, but hearing a song of deliverance from the heart of God for another soul is a level of freedom for both the receiver and the one on the receiving end that is truly beyond human understanding to fully grasp. God tells us in His Word that He will surround us with songs of deliverance…not just for ourselves, but for others we are in relationship with. I have received many such songs – not only for myself – but for countless others. The song It’s Gonna Be Alright is such a song. Born out of a need in my own family as well as for a need in a another family, this song transcended our family’s situation and became a song of deliverance for thousands and thousands of others. Spend time this week focusing on what Jesus focused on – meeting the needs of others. Be ready to receive a song of deliverance…and then share it with those who need to hear it!
You are my hiding place;
You preserve me from trouble;
You surround me with songs of deliverance.

Write Relationally -
I would guess that 99.9% of every song I have received has come through some relationship, whether with my God or with some person I am in fellowship with. Relationship is life. When I receive a song of worship I address my Father relationally as I sing that song. When a friend or family member hurts, I ask the Lord to give me a song that will minister to them. Sometimes that song comes from Father’s perspective but it often comes as a means to help the person I am ministering to reach out to God. No relationship is off limits or unusable by the Lord. Even if you only have a few seconds with another human being but recognize a need in their soul, God can use that moment to birth an idea – or an entire song. Use these songs to minister to these people one-on-one. Who says you need a crowd or a recording deal to do that? Believe. Receive…and then release what you have been given.
'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.'

Write Just For the Fun of It
Even though the subject matter of my life tends to lead me to deep places of dire and serious ministry, I sometimes write what I feel just for the sheer joy of it! In order to go to the depths to which ministry requires I go sometimes to reach a hurting soul, I fill my own soul with joy. I recently wrote a song using the ukulele – just for the sheer fun I knew that instrument would lend to a song of joy! That song is called Might as Well Be Happy and came during one of those silly moments of human fun that was infused with God’s anointing for a song! Do you take time to fill your soul with joy and laughter? My serious, ministerial songs are always born out of a joyful soul that allows me the grace to reach to the depths such a song requires me to go. Spend time writing a silly song today and see if God is not just as concerned with blessing you as when you are in pain or sorrow! It’ll do you good!
A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.
Proverbs 17:22 NASB
